Shutters come up at openings on canal banks in R.A. Puram

This move by Public Works Department to place gates/shutters is aimed at preventing littering in these areas in and around the canal at RA Puram
Residents of R.A. Puram and R.K. Nagar are pleased about Public Works Department’s initiative to install gates at various openings along canal banks and stormwater drain outlets below the Mandaveli railway station.
Previously, the canal banks were often used as dumping grounds for food and material waste. Now they have been cleaned and also provided with shutters to protect them from littering. This effort ensures that waste does not enter the canal during rains, which could otherwise lead to clogged channels.
The old, broken gates in R.A. Puram have also been replaced following many complaints about dumping of garbage and public misuse. The canal bed, previously clogged with wood waste and building debris, was recently cleaned. These obstructions had caused soil erosion and frequent flooding, hindering water from seeping into the ground or the canal.
“After a long wait, the new gates were installed, which will now prevent people from entering the canal to dump waste. I also request the PWD and GCC to plant palm trees and create a mini-garden as this would deter misuse of the space, prevent soil erosion and help maintain groundwater levels,” said Dr. Chandrasekaran, president of R.A. Puram Residents Association (RAPRA).
Similarly, the gate in R.K. Nagar near Sringeri Mutt Road faced similar issues. “Residents of R.K. Nagar have worked hard to keep our area clean and green. We have been requesting creation of small parks and palm trees along the canal bank beds to prevent misuse and reduce dumping. While the new gates have helped, they are not a permanent solution. The area still suffers from misuse, and the odour is unpleasant. We urge the PWD and GCC to plant trees to prevent soil erosion and foster a healthier environment,” said K.L. Balasubramanian, an active member of R.K. Nagar Residents Association.
