Accredited Social Activists (ASHA) from across the State congregated in front of the Secretariat on Thursday in a show of strength, bringing traffic and life in general around the Secretariat to a standstill, demanding that they be paid a decent honorarium and incentive for the stellar work they were doing for the Health department at the grassroots.
ASHAs have been on agitation in front of the Secretariat since the past 11 days , demanding the pending payment of their meagre honorarium and incentives and also bringing into public focus the fact that they were an underpaid and overworked workforce of the Health department.
They demanded that their honorarium be hiked to ₹21,000. Though the Health Minister issued a statement that the honorarium amount had been released and that the honorarium would henceforth be paid without linking it to any conditions, ASHAs have refused to withdraw their stir till their demand for a hike in remuneration and retirement benefits were met. The fact that the government was failing to prioritise the welfare of the Health department’s foot soldiers, while announcing a huge salary and allowance hike for a category of higher officials who were already drawing a handsome salary, was highlighted by the ASHAs during the rally and dharna on Thursday
