Shortcomings in security arrangements led to loss of lives in Karur, alleges Palaniswami

AIADMK leader blames State government for Karur stampede, criticizes lack of safety measures at Vijay's public meeting.
Mr. Palaniswami further accused the government of showing partiality in providing police protection. “Even during my recent campaign, security was provided in only three or four districts. In our AIADMK regime, we ensured protection for every party and protest, regardless of affiliation. Now, organisers are forced to approach the courts just to hold meetings,” he alleged.
He said people attend such public gatherings trusting the State government, the police, and the leaders who organise them. “All three share responsibility for ensuring their safety. That trust has been broken,” he added.
Taking a swipe at Mr. Vijay, the AIADMK leader said, “They arrive several hours late, make people wait, and then attend programmes. This is not responsible behaviour.”
Referring to Mr. Vijay’s remarks at the rally questioning the arrival of ambulances at the venue, Mr. Palaniswami said such comments “raise suspicion.”
He added such a tragedy had never occurred at public meetings in Tamil Nadu in the past. “Political parties must take responsibility. Experienced parties have organised several public conferences and know how to manage crowds and avoid loss of lives. This should have been handled with care,” he said.
Earlier, he paid respects to the deceased persons and called on the injured at the Karur Medical College Hospital.
