The Supreme Court on Thursday called out the Nagaland government for delaying implementing a 33% reservation for women in Municipalities and Town Councils.
Criticizing the government, the SC said it is a “shocking state of affairs.”
While orally observing that there was a delay at every stage with regard to women’s rights, the bench further remarked that it’s shameful for the state to defeat women’s rights like this.
“Will they wait for a lifetime for you to do something?” the bench said.
The observations were made after the court was informed that the State Election Commission has been unable to notify the schedule of the elections.
Advocate General KN Balagopal appearing for the State informed the court that the state has given its approval for implementation of the reservation to the Election Commission, and the Commission has to now issue a notification for polls.
The bench however, observed that State’s approval was given to the Commission only two days before the court was scheduled to hear the case.
