Elderly Jharkhand man forced to drink urine by villagers over witchcraft suspicion
India Today
People in Duna village of Jharkhand's Latehar district blamed the man for the death of a woman in a road accident, alleging that he had caused it through sorcery.
In an incident epitomising complete social apathy, locals allegedly forced an elderly man to drink urine after branding him a ‘witch’ in a village in Jharkhand’s Latehar district, officials said on Wednesday. The act reportedly followed accusations of black magic linked to a recent road accident in the village.
According to the victim’s son, Brajesh Munda, the incident occurred on Tuesday.
Villagers blamed his father, identified as Virendra Singh, for the death of a woman in a road accident, alleging that he had caused it through sorcery.
Around 15 villagers allegedly convened a meeting and formally accused the elderly man of witchcraft before forcing him to consume urine.
Munda added that villagers also attempted to compel his mother to consume the same filth, but he intervened to prevent her from being humiliated.
During the incident, Heena Devi, a community health worker, tried to stop the villagers.
