
Several localities in Tiruchi still reeling under water for the second day

After the heavy downpour over the past two days, several parts of Tiruchi, especially residential areas, remain inundated on Saturday, throwing life out of gear.

The district received around 42.49 mm rainfall in 24 hours ending 6 a.m. on Saturday. Tiruchi Junction registered 60 mm, Tiruchi town 62 mm, and Tiruchi airport 65.4 mm.
Residential areas in different parts of the city witnessed heavy waterlogging. Localities such as Anbu Nagar, T.S.A Nagar, Shakthi Vinayagar Kovil Street, Gandhi Nagar in Crawford, Health Colony, K.R.S. Nagar in Edamalaipatti Pudur, Ramachandra Nagar, Kattur, Dheeran Nagar, Khajamalai, Vishwas Nagar, K.K. Nagar, Krishnamoorthy Nagar, Anna Nagar in Thennur, Linga Nagar, Vayalur Road, Srinivasan Nagar, M.G.R. Nagar, Periyar Nagar in Tiruverumbur, Murugan Nagar, Selva Nagar and Kottapattu were flooded.
Major waterbodies, including Kollankulam, Gundur Lake, Kottapattu Periyakulam and Uyyakondan Canal, attained full capacity. The Uyyakondan canal near Kuzhumayee Amman Temple overflowed, flooding the temple premises. The railway station subway was also inundated.
Residents from the inundated areas were shifted to nearby community halls and Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHC).
Meanwhile, Karumandapam and Selva Nagar areas continue to reel under the impact of heavy rain. Empty plots and construction sites in Selva Nagar, where there is thick overgrowth, were flooded. The stagnating water raised health concerns among the residents. They complained that it flooded easily as the homes were built on a lowland.
Viswas Nagar Extension Street and Manthoppu in Karumandapam were worst hit. Forty-two houses houses were flooded and the residents had to leave their dwellings to spend the night at an UPHC.
