CCB arrests Bengaluru couple for running a fake government job scam, cheating over 100 victims out of crores.
The Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths have arrested a couple suspected of cheating over 100 people by promising Central government and State government jobs, swindling crores of rupees.
The accused have been identified as Jason D’Souza, 39, and Lavina, 36, a married couple. While the exact extent of the scam is yet to be ascertained by investigators, they say that the sheer number of victims, over 100, suggests it can be approximated at around ₹5 crore.
According to CCB sources, the couple was running a small-time business that involved engaging with citizens, through which they developed a few contacts. Leveraging those contacts, the couple reached out to people and further spread the message, claiming they could help secure government jobs.
The accused would initially demand ₹2 lakh to ₹15 lakh as commission and additional processing charges. They would then get documents from their victims to look like they were initiating the process and go on to even get their documents verified.
The appointment orders would eventually never materialise. After one victim filed a complaint a few months ago and the couple were exposed, more victims have, since then, approached the police.
Cases have now been registered in multiple police stations across the city, including Basaveshwara Nagar, Jnanabharathi, and the CCB station. There are also cases against the couple in the Koppal district, according to a senior CCB officer.
