SCOTUS rules against Trump tariffs. What about the $2k rebate checks?
USA TODAY
Trump has issued tariffs throughout his first year back in office. He also suggested sending some of the revenue back to Americans in $2,000 checks.
The idea to send $2,000 checks to Americans from tariff revenue was far-fetched, even before the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against some of President Donald Trump's tariff orders.
The highly anticipated Feb. 20 decision on tariffs found Trump exceeded his power by issuing widespread tariffs without clear authorization from Congress. Trump has previously warned, "WE'RE SCREWED" if the court deemed the tariffs, which have already collected hundreds of billions of dollars, illegal. Some tariff revenue collected last year will need to be refunded to businesses.
Trump's tariff orders made constant news throughout his first year in office. On a few occasions, he had teased sending money to Americans from the revenue collected from the tax on imports.
"The tariff money is so substantial. That’s coming in, that I’ll be able to do $2,000 sometime. I would say toward the end of the year," Trump told The New York Times in an exclusive sit-down interview in January.
Here is what we know about those checks in light of the Supreme Court ruling.
