An employee who was injured in a shooting at a Department of Veterans Affairs clinic in northwestern Georgia earlier this week has died, authorities said Thursday, March 19.
Local police responded to a shooting at a Veterans Affairs clinic at around 1:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday, March 17, in Jasper, Georgia, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a news release. When officers arrived at the scene, they confronted the suspected shooter outside the clinic.
The suspect, who was identified as Lawrence Charles Michels, 51, was at the clinic for a walk-in mental health consultation when he shot an employee with a handgun, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. After shooting the employee, investigators said Michels exited the clinic and encountered police officers and an armed civilian.
Michels was then shot and killed following an exchange of gunfire with officers and the civilian, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and no officers were injured in the incident.
