Score! This northern Sask. arena serves rink classics and Indian food
CBC
CBC's road trip series Land of Living Stories explores inspiring stories of community spirit from across Saskatchewan. In our latest visit, CBC-Radio Canada hit the road to La Ronge. This is the third of a multi-part series from that community.
At La Ronge's Mel Hegland Uniplex, the smell of Indian spices greets visitors before they even reach the ice.
Inside, Kay's Kitchen offers something a little unexpected for an arena canteen: butter chicken and biryani alongside burgers and fries.
Kamalpreet Kaur Dhillon is the mastermind and master chef behind the idea.
"The people at the arena are surprised," Dhillon said. "They're like, it's a hockey rink, how are people going to know [it's there]? Surprisingly, it brings more people here just because of the food."
La Ronge sits about 240 kilometres north of Prince Albert.
The Mel Hegland Uniplex used to be home to the Ice Wolves, the local junior hockey team, until this season.
Now, Kay's Kitchen is helping keep the facility busy with a steady flow of customers.
For Dhillon, the kitchen is an unlikely chapter in a life that has already taken her far from home.
Originally from India, she moved to Canada in 2017 and spent time in Prince Edward Island and Ontario, before landing in La Ronge two years ago. She had only planned for a short stint working as a teaching assistant to test the waters.
Instead, she stayed — and built something of her own.
Kay's Kitchen has been operating out of the arena since November 2025, but the business started much more modestly.
Dhillon said one of her students wanted to try Indian food, so she brought some to share.
It wasn't long before staff members caught a whiff of what was going on and wanted a taste for themselves.
