SC to hear plea to postpone NEET PG exam today as candidates demand more time to prepare

The Supreme Court will today hear the plea seeking to postpone the NEET PG 2022 exam scheduled for May 21 as candidates seek more time to prepare.

The plea to postpone the postgraduate medical entrance exam -- National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate (NEET PG) -- will be heard by the Supreme Court today after a petition filed by candidates which said the current exam scheduled to be held on May 21 was clashing with the ongoing counselling process of NEET PG 2021.

The decision to list the petition for hearing the petition for NEET PG 2022 postponement was taken by a bench led by Justice DY Chandrachud. Students have also been requesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the postponement of NEET PG 2022.

Doctors who cleared the NEET PG 2021 and secured lower ranks will wait till the last rounds to get a seat. However, the application process for NEET PG 2022 has also been closed.

If not extended further, the counselling process will end by May 9 and the exam will begin on May 21. Candidates claim that this leaves little time for preparation and can lead to a year's loss.

On Thursday, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in its letter to Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandiviya also requested the postponement of the exam.

The IMA said the NEET-PG 2021 was held five months after the scheduled date in September 2021. Then the counselling scheduled to begin on October 25, 2021, was also initiated (in January 2022) after a delay due to the pending decision on seat reservations and was further delayed owing to a Supreme Court ruling of March 31, 2022, which ordered the cancellation and conduction of a special round of counselling for the Mop-up round.
