Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is set to join Prime Minister Mark Carney as he travels to China and meets with the country's president this week.
Moe has said he believes the meetings will serve as an opportunity to recalibrate the relationship between Canada and China.
"I am pleased to join Prime Minister Carney as we advance interests that are important to Canadians," Moe is quoted as saying in a news release.
Carney's arrival in China will be the first time a prime minister has visited the country since 2017. His trip has broad goals of elevating "engagement on trade, energy, agriculture, and international security," according to his office, as he meets with Chinese President Xi Xinping and Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
Moe will have a more specific goal of addressing Chinese tariffs on canola.
In March 2025, China placed a 100 per cent duty on canola, an important crop for Saskatchewan's agricultural sector. China also slapped tariffs on pork and seafood.
The tariffs were widely seen as a response to the duties the federal government placed on Chinese-made electric vehicles in 2024.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has urged Carney to stand firm on the EV tariffs.
The effects of the tariffs have been punishing for farmers in Moe's province.
In an interview on Rosemary Barton Live, Bill Prybylski, president of the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan, told Barton he estimates his farm has lost about $450,000 due to the tariffs.
"We've had good yields this past year, so we're able to make our financial commitments," Prybylski said. "But certainly going forward, we're having a very close look at where we're going to be spending our dollars because we know they are going to be limited."
Other canola farmers have offered similar stories in the weeks and months since China applied its tariff.
Moe travelled to China last year as part of his efforts to have the Chinese tariffs removed. He was joined by Kody Blois, Prime Minister Mark Carney's parliamentary secretary.
Carney's visit to China is set to run from Jan. 13 to 17, according to his office.
