The City of Prince George says it has reduced the evacuation zone after a gas leak prompted an emergency alert Saturday.
The city initially issued the alert at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, ordering people in a specific area of the city to evacuate immediately, saying the leak poses a threat to human life.
Tanya Spooner, manager of emergency programs for the city, said the initial evacuation covered roughly a two-block radius encompassing the area north of Fifth Avenue to Zion Lutheran Church and east of Tabor Boulevard west of Voyageur Drive.
Officials have since reduced it to the immediate area surrounding the leak.
In a media release, the city said Prince George Fire Rescue crews, RCMP and FortisBC crews are at the scene working to address what is believed to be an underground gas leak.
Officials say power has also been shut off in the impacted area.
Residents were directed earlier to evacuate to Zion Lutheran Christian Church on Tabor Boulevard, where emergency staff are available to help.
Spooner said most residents made arrangements with friends or family, while a small number of people remain at the church.
Nearby businesses, including a Shell gas station and a McDonald’s, are closed in the affected area.
