Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized N.L.’s Bay Du Nord offshore oil project as a key project to help stabilize international energy markets amidst the war in Iran while in Norway on Saturday.
“[Bay Du Nord] is a very attractive project off Newfoundland, which we look to move forward,” said Carney during a media scrum at the Holmenkollen Skifestival on Saturday.
The Prime Minister travelled to Norway on Friday to attend a NATO wargaming exercise that included Canadian troops. Carney is also using his time to discuss with leaders Canada's role in strengthening Arctic defence and the stabilizing global oil supply chains.
Before taking in a ski festival on Saturday, Carney held meetings with energy companies – including Norwegian-based energy company Equinor, the chief licensee and operator of the Bay du Nord development.
Earlier this month, Newfoundland and Labrador reached a benefits agreement with Equinor and BP that will open a path for construction and production of the Bay du Nord project.
While talking to reporters about Canada’s contribution to the global oil market Carney mentioned that Bay Du Nord was a topic of conversation during the meetings.
