Samrat Prithviraj to Bajrangi Bhaijaan, 5 Bollywood films that came under spotlight for their titles. On Monday Masala
India Today
The title of Akshay Kumar's film Prithviraj has been changed to Samrat Prithviraj. In today's edition of Monday Masala, we talk about five films that made headlines for their titles.
On Friday, May 27, Akshay Kumar-starrer Prithviraj became Samrat Prithviraj. The development followed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Shree Rajput Karni Sena that was opposed to the original title. This isn't the first time a Bollywood film's title had to be changed close to its release date. Previously, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh's Padmaavat saw massive protests due to its title. And not to mention, the title of Akshay Kumar's Laxmmi Bomb had to be altered days before its release. In today's edition of Monday Masala, here's looking at five films that received flak for their titles.
The title of Akshay Kumar's upcoming film, Prithviraj has been changed to Samrat Prithviraj. The film is all set for release on June 3. The development took place after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by Shree Rajput Karni Sena, through Advocate Raghavendra Mehrotra. Post numerous meetings, the film's makers (YRF), considering the sentiment and demand of the Rajput community, agreed to change the film's name from Prithviraj to Samrat Prithviraj.
Starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, Padmavati received a lot of flak for reasons more than one. One of the many reasons was the film's title -- Padmavati. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) asked director Sanjay Leela Bhansali to change the name of Padmavati to Padmaavat, after the 16th Century epic of which the movie is an adaptation. The name of the film was finally changed to Padmaavat in January 2018.
Back in 2020, Akshay Kumar came under controversy over his film title, Laxmmi Bomb. Reportedly, the film's makers had received a legal notice from Shri Rajput Karni Sena. As per the notice, the film's title was considered disrespectful to Goddess Laxmi, and it hurt the Hindu community's sentiments. The notice also demanded a change in the film's title and said that the current one sends out a wrong message to society. And that's how the film came to be known as Laxmii.
