The residents of Ferozepur, the ancestral hometown of Ripudaman Singh Malik, are in a state of shock after he was shot dead in Canada.

The residents of Ferozepur, the ancestral hometown of Ripudaman Singh Malik, are in a deep state of shock after he was shot dead. Canada-based Sikh leader and businessman Ripudaman Singh Malik, who was acquitted in the 1985 Air India bombing, was shot dead in Surrey, Canada on Thursday.

Ripudaman Singh Malik originally hailed from Ferozepur Cantt area and had left for Canada in 1972.

"We condemn this incident which is shameful to entire humanity. Despite having left Ferozepur, he continuously helped the people of this region. Be it education, health or even the pandemic, the help poured in from Canada. We are deeply saddened," said Jora Singh, a local resident.

A known philanthropist, Ripudaman Malik had donated his land and home for setting up a school and an old age home after leaving the country. He also donated funds to the schools, setting up free kitchens at various places, besides organising free eye-check-up camps everywhere. Malik once lived in Ferozepur along with his family.

Another resident, Rupinder Singh, told India Today, "Ripudaman Singh Malik's demise has shattered his dreams of setting up an old-age home in the village to which he had donated his ancestral home. If this can happen to a person like him, what can we hope for others? His departure is a big loss to humanity."

Rupinder Singh said, "His family members, including two brothers and a sister, had moved to New Delhi. While his elder brother lives in America, the younger one is a Delhi resident. The family still owns a house besides other properties in Ferozepur."
