Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday paid glowing tributes to the matinee idol of the Telugu film industry and former Chief Minister of the composite Andhra Pradesh the late Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao.
Speaking at a function organised to celebrate the diamond jubilee of his first film ‘Mana Desam’, which was released 75 years ago, Mr. Naidu said rarely would one get to see a person of such extraordinary vision, achievements, grace and humility. “His immense contributions to Telugu culture, cinema, and politics have etched his name permanently in the annals of history,” he said
Recalling his birth in a humble village of Nimmakuru in 1923, he said NTR’s life was a remarkable journey of determination and self-made success. From his modest beginnings as the son of a farmer, he rose to become the matinee idol of Telugu cinema and later, a transformative political leader who championed the rights of the underprivileged.
Mr. Naidu said NTR’s early life was marked by hardship and discipline. “After moving to Vijayawada for his studies, he began his days delivering milk door-to-door before commuting to Guntur for education. In 1945, driven by dreams of excelling in cinema, NTR boarded a train to Madras to explore opportunities in the film industry. His perseverance caught the attention of stalwarts like L.V. Prasad, Nagi Reddy and Chakrapani who gave him his the first break.
Mr. Naidu said in a career spanning five decades, NTR acted in over 300 films, becoming an unparalleled figure in the world of Telugu cinema. Starting with his debut in ‘Mana Desam’ in 1949, he carved a niche with historic, social and mythological roles.
The Chief Minister said NTR’s influence extended beyond the silver screen. He founded the Telugu Desam Party in 1982 and within nine months, he became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, which was a rare achievement. He focussed on uplifting the poor and marginalised communities and took some path-breaking decisions.
Former Vice-President of India Venkaiah Naidu said NTR was a rare soul endowed with an extraordinary purpose. “His character was a blend of discipline, determination and hard work, qualities that define true greatness.” He said even after 75 years since his cinematic debut, NTR’s life story continued to serve as a source of inspiration. His name would live on in the hearts of Telugu people, he added.
