Review meeting in Salem addresses child labour eradication, focusing on legal protections and collaborative actions among various officials.
A review meeting on eradicating child labour was held at the Salem Collectorate on Saturday (February 28, 2026). The meeting was presided over by the chairperson of the Tamil Nadu Commission for Protection of Child Rights (TNCPCR), Pudukkottai Vijaya.
TNCPCR officials said that the Commission has powers equivalent to a civil court to protect children from violations of their rights and to investigate cases. Furthermore, it has the power to establish and monitor children’s courts to expeditiously investigate crimes against children and violations of rights by requesting relevant documents from the police, courts, and other offices. The Commission functions with powers including recommending appropriate relief and rehabilitation measures to the government or the relevant authorities for children affected by violations.
In the meeting, Revenue Divisional Officers (RDOs), officials from the District Legal Service Authority, Health, School Education, District Employment and Career Guidance Departments, the Integrated Child Development Scheme, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), principals of government ITIs, and the Child Welfare Committee participated and were advised to conduct discussions with the owners of spinning mills, poultry farms, brick kilns, silver anklet workshops, hotels, and lorry workshops and to take action to eradicate child labour.
Particularly, the meeting discussed the implementation of the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, the Juvenile Justice Act, and the measures taken for the protection of children in schools and to re-admit dropouts in schools.
In the meeting, TNCPCR member M. Kasimir Raj, District Child Protection Officer C. Srimurali and officials from departments concerned participated.
