
Rain subsides in Chennai, civic authorities work round the clock to pump out water

Chennai and several areas in Chengelpet, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts remained flooded as civic body authorities worked to pump out water.
Rainfall in Chennai and its suburbs subsided on Friday, bringing a much needed respite for residents from intense showers that have battered Tamil Nadu since last week. The rain fury left a trail of destruction in several districts -- submerged crops, uprooted trees, flooded neighbourhoods and over 1,000 damaged huts and houses. As many as 14 people were killed in rain-related incidents in the state.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.
