Demand for closure of Tasmac liquor outlets near Salem New Bus Stand due to public safety concerns.
The public and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) have demanded closure of five Tasmac liquor outlets functioning near the Salem New Bus Stand.
Every day, more than 10,000 passengers utilise the bus stand from where over 500 buses are operated to various districts and States. Five Tasmac outlets are located between the exit point of the bus stand and Meyyanur Main Road, including three on the main road near the bus stand. Of these five outlets, four do not have bar facilities and hence, customers park their vehicles on the road and consume liquor on the roadside.
P. Narayanan, a resident of Pallapatti, said that drunken brawls are common in front of these outlets. Though Pallapatti police station is situated 300 metres from these outlets, the police remain mute spectators. The district administration should close these five outlets immediately or shift them to another place, he added.
CPI(M) Salem urban secretary N. Praveen Kumar said that in the past eight months numerous petitions were submitted to the district administration, revenue officials, and Tasmac officials, to no avail. The party announced a protest on March 30. During the peace talks conducted on March 28, the revenue officials gave a written assurance to shift three shops functioning on the main road before May 1. But, no action was taken. So, the party organised a protest on May 18, 2025 (Sunday). The officials have given an assurance to shift shops before June 30. If the shops are not shifted, CPI(M) will organise a major protest and lock the five shops, Mr. Praveen added.
Officials attached to the district TASMAC department said that instructions were given to look for an alternate place to shift two shops in the first phase. Once the new place is finalised, two shops will be shifted. Based on higher officials’ direction, the remaining shops will be shifted in the next phase, the officials added.
