
Pre-monsoon population estimation kicks off in Anamalai Tiger Reserve

Pre-monsoon tiger census in Anamalai Tiger Reserve conducted according to NTCA protocol, data submitted on May 17.
The pre-monsoon (summer) estimation of tigers and other animals started in Pollachi and Tiruppur divisions of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) on Saturday.
The exercise, also called Phase IV population monitoring, is conducted in accordance with the eight-day protocol of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) for monitoring tigers, co-predators, prey, and their habitat.
The exercise from May 10 to 17 will cover Pollachi, Valparai, Ulandy and Manambolly forest ranges of Pollachi division and Udumalpet, Amaravathy, Kozhumam and Vandaravu forest ranges in Tirupur division.
D. Venkatesh, Chief Conservator of Forests and Field Director of ATR, will supervise the estimation for which orientation sessions were held for the staff on Saturday. Field surveys started on Sunday.
A release from ATR said that the estimation will focus on carnivore and mega herbivore sign surveys from May 11 to 13. Line transects, vegetation sampling (trees, shrubs, and weeds), assessment of human disturbance, ground cover analysis, pellet count of prey species and recording of vultures and other bird species will be held from May 14 to May 16.
The data collected in the census from each forest range will be consolidated on May 17 and will be submitted to the NTCA.
