Power supply to be restored in Chandigarh after 36 hours

Power supply in parts of Chandigarh will be restored soon. The city faced disruptions in power supply at several places since Monday after employees of the electricity department held a strike to protest a privatisation move.

The power supply in parts of Chandigarh will be restored after more than 36 hours of major disruption. The city has witnessed power outages since Monday night after employees of the electricity department launched a three-day strike to protest a privatisation move.

According to sources, the decision to restore the power supply was taken after an agreement was reached between the Chandigarh Administration and electricity department employees. Bad weather conditions were cited as another reason for the restoration of power supply.

Several employees of the electricity department went on a strike on Monday night. This led to disruptions in power supply at several places, plunging the city into darkness.

President of the union Dhian Singh said they are protesting against the UT Chandigarh administration's decision to privatise the electricity department.

The protesting employees claimed that if the electricity department was privatised, their service conditions would change and it also could lead to a rise in power tariffs.

Following the protests, the Chandigarh administration invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act, banning strikes by the electricity department for six months.

The outage since Monday night forced government hospitals in the union territory to reschedule elective surgeries, besides adversely affecting residential, industrial and commercial areas in the city.
