
Pourakarmikas, safai karmacharis in Bengaluru stage protest seeking permanent jobs, better wages

Pourakarmikas and safai karmacharis staged an indefinite sit-in protest at Bengaluru’s Freedom Park demanding better wages and permanent jobs. Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai will meet with officials at 6.30 pm to discuss the issue.
Over 1,000 pourakarmikas and safai karmacharis gathered at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Friday, July 1, to stage an indefinite sit-in demonstration demanding better wages and permanent jobs.
Porakarmikas refer to street sweepers who collect waste and clean public places. Safai karmacharis refer to people engaged in, or employed for, manually carrying human excreta or any sanitation work.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister, Basavaraj Bommai, has scheduled a meeting with officials at 6.30 pm today to discuss the problems of pourakarmikas.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.
