The Basavaraj Bommai-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) issued an order directing a newly formed committee to prepare a report to convert pourakarmikas jobs from contract to tenure basis.
Following discussions, the government has assured to simplify the process of recruitment of pourakarmikas by framing new rules. The letter added that the government will form a committee comprising higher officials and representatives from the Karnataka State Safai Karamchari Development Corporation, union leaders, and others.
The letter also states that barring BBMP limits, the contract system will be abolished in a phased manner without affecting waste management work.
Maitreyi Krishnan, BBMP Guttridge Pourakarmikara Sangha, said the committee will also look into implementation of ‘equal pay for equal work’ for the workers and the Legislative Assembly will propose a special law in the upcoming session.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He was allegedly threatened with his life over the delay in repayment. Fearing for his life, Sachin immediately alerted the police.
