Police have added 25,754 CCTV cameras in 10 districts in south zone since August 2024: Inspector General of Police

Southern districts add 25,754 CCTV cameras to enhance public safety and surveillance, with district-specific installations and control rooms.
Concerted efforts taken by the police in southern districts have helped to add 25,754 new closed-circuit television cameras since August 2024 in the south zone.
“With a total of 71,290 CCTV cameras in the 10 southern districts now, this is a major step towards crime prevention and detection. Besides, the camera network would also enhance public safety and surveillance,” said Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Prem Anand Sinha.
With the district police units taking up several awareness programmes on crime prevention and public safety, addition of 25,000-odd cameras was possible with the cooperation and assistance of the members of the public, he added.
Madurai district alone has added 1,727 cameras. The number of cameras added in each district is Virudhunagar - 1235, Dindigul - 1155, Theni - 2729, Ramanathapuram - 2509, Sivaganga - 1495, Tirunelveli - 2009, Tenkasi - 4023, Thoothukudi - 1386, and Kanniyakumari - 7486.
The IG said that Dindigul district has got three police control rooms which help to monitor the feed of 510 CCTV cameras installed in 4 sub-divisions in the district.
Theni district has inaugurated a modern police control room in which 14 automatic number plate recognition cameras and 14 internet protocol CCTV cameras were installed at border check posts with live feed available providing real-time monitoring and detecting vehicle make and registration details.
Similarly Ramanathapuram district has got a modern police control room with 17 ANPR cameras and 70 CCTV cameras.
