Residents of Arasan Nagar in Dindigul face sewage overflow, prompting mass exodus due to lack of action from officials.
For about two weeks now there has been a mass exodus of sorts with residents of Arasan Nagar on GTN road in Dindigul slowly moving out of the area to a relatives or friends place.
The Dindigul Corporation officials had contributed in arresting the overflow of sewage and clearing the sullage that had been stagnant in a house emitting foul stench all over the residential area of Arasan Nagar.
Despite repeated complaints from the residents of Ward 17 of Dindigul Corporation, the authorities were yet to pump out and clear the sewage that entered a household due to a leakage in the underground drainage system. This had affected the entire area.
A resident of the area A.R. Thangaraj, a retired government official, said that the situation was getting worse everyday. “We had to endure sleepless nights for about two weeks now. The stench from the stagnant was unbearable”, he said.
He said that the residents had taken photographs of the stagnant sewage and sent it to the authorities concerned urging them to take necessary steps. However, there was no proper response from the authorities, he said.
“Unable to bear the stench, some have moved to their relatives or friends place and some have sent their children as the fear of dengue outbreak looms large”, he said.
“We are unable to breathe properly. Despite giving repeated complaints to the authorities concerned, they have not responded properly”, complained T. Valarmathi, another resident.
