Orange weather alert issued for Coimbatore and the Nilgiris districts from May 27

RMC issues orange alert for Coimbatore and Nilgiris due to heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in Tamil Nadu.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued an orange alert for Coimbatore and the Nilgiris for four days from Tuesday (May 27, 2025). Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at a few places in the Nilgiris and the ghat areas of Coimbatore districts. Heavy rain has also been predicted at isolated places in Tiruppur, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Erode, Krishnagiri, and Dharmapuri districts on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning, is likely to occur at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal areas. On Monday, with the Southwest Monsoon further advanced into some more parts of the central Arabian Sea, the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, some more parts of west-central and north Bay of Bengal. Coimbatore, Dindigul, Erode, Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi, the Nilgiris, Theni, Tirunelveli, and Tiruppur districts received widespread rain.
Heavy to very rain occurred at many places in the Nilgiris district and the ghat areas of Coimbatore district, with a few places getting extremely heavy rain.
From 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on Monday, observatories in Valparai registered 41.8 mm of rainfall, Upasi Tea Research Foundation 38 mm, Nagercoil 17.5 mm, Udhagamandalam 15 mm, Kanniyakumari 14 mm, Pechiparai in Kanniyakumari district 11.5 mm and Coimbatore 7 mm.
In the Nilgiris, during the 24 hour period, ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday, Avalanche registered 35 cm, Upper Bhavani 30 cm, Emerald 18 cm, Gudalur Bazaar 15 cm, Went Worth Estate taluk office and Pandalur 14 cm each; and Upper Gudalur 13 cm.
The RMC has also predicted that a low-pressure area is likely to form over west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around Tuesday.
