In order to penalise vehicle owners and drivers who commit violations such as using unauthorised coloured lights and not dimming the high beam, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) in Kerala on Monday launched a 10-day statewide drive known as 'Operation Focus'.
The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) in Kerala on Monday launched 'Operation Focus', a 10-day statewide drive, to track vehicle owners and drivers who commit violations such as using unauthorised coloured lights and not dimming the high beam.
The drive was organised in the wake of the fire that occurred in a tourist bus from Kannur in Goa three days ago. On further investigation, it was found that the fire was caused because the bus operator had changed the original electrical wiring and fittings to install additional lights.
The MVD will conduct night inspection from 7 PM and 3 AM on April 5, 8 and 12. The inspection will also consider lack of parking lights, non-illumination of registration mark and rear number plate, noise and air pollution, unauthorised fitting of searchlights and use of excess lights. The monitoring will continue after the inspection too.
The Contract Carriage Operators Association (CCOA ) has urged members to refrain from using unauthorised lights and fittings. The lights are mostly changed to attract youngsters to the vehicles. CCOA general secretary S Prasanthan said that such tendencies should be discouraged.
Fancy lights are considered to be a major reason for accidents. The glaring lights blind the drivers, resulting in accidents. This has also encouraged the MVD to go forward with the move.
