No winner in Russia-Ukraine war, serious impact on poor, developing nations: PM Modi during Berlin visit

During a visit to Berlin, his first in Europe since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, PM Modi said there will be no winning party in the conflict and called for peace.

In a strong push for peace, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday in Berlin that there will be no winning party in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

“We believe that there will be no winner in this war and all will suffer losses. Therefore, we are on the side of peace,” he said, while delivering remarks after a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

PM Modi noted that oil prices have been skyrocketing due to the Ukraine conflict, and there is also a shortage of food grains and fertilisers in many parts of the world. The impact of these developments on developing and poor countries will be particularly serious, he said.

The prime minister also expressed concern over the humanitarian consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war, which has been ongoing for 60-plus days now. Thousands of civilians have been killed and millions displaced by Russia’s invasion, which began on February 24.

“From the very beginning of the Ukrainian crisis, we called for an immediate ceasefire, insisting that dialogue is the only way to resolve the dispute,” he reiterated.

On his part, Chancellor Scholz said Russia has violated the UN charter by attacking Ukraine. He said he has also invited Prime Minister Modi for G-7 summit in Germany.
