
No anticipatory bail for Karti Chidambaram in bribe-for-visa case

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram sought a seven-day extension to his interim bail to approach the Delhi High Court for relief in the money laundering case in connection with the visa scam.
A special court in Delhi has dismissed Congress MP Karti Chidambaram and other accused’s plea for anticipatory bail in a money laundering case in connection with the bribe-for-visa scam.
The court has reserved its order while denying interim protection to the Congress leader and the son of former Union Minister P Chidambaram.

The Enforcement Directorate countered the plea, saying that interim protection has already been granted and that extending it would effectively grant him anticipatory bail.
The hearing on the plea began last week with the financial probe agency calling the bail plea premature since “there were no grounds for the anticipatory bail plea to be permitted”.
Karti Chidambaram has been accused of taking a bribe of Rs 50 lakh from a Punjab-based firm through his associate in order to facilitate the visas of 263 Chinese nationals. However, he has maintained that his father is the actual target of the central agencies.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.
