NIMS Hyderabad doctors perform successful heart transplant on 19-year-old Anil Kumar, free of charge through government schemes.
Doctors at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad successfully performed a heart transplant surgery, giving a new lease of life to 19-year-old Anil Kumar. The procedure involved transplanting a heart harvested from a brain-dead donor.
Anil Kumar, a priest from Hyderabad’s Katedan had been battling dilated cardiomyopathy (DCMP) for several years. DCMP is a heart muscle disease where the heart’s chambers, especially the left ventricle, become enlarged and thin, making it harder for the heart to pump blood effectively, potentially leading to heart failure.
Seeking a solution, he registered with Telangana government’s cadaver transplantation programme, Jeevandan. His wait ended two days ago when a young man, injured in a road accident, was declared brain-dead. After compatibility tests, Anil’s blood samples matched the donor’s, paving the way for the life-saving surgery.
The complex operation was led by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. M. Amaresh Rao alongside cardiothoracic specialists and those from the anaesthesia team providing critical support. The medical team worked seamlessly to transplant the heart, and post-surgery, Anil’s condition has been reported as stable. He is currently under observation in the ICU, breathing without ventilator assistance, said a release from the hospital.
NIMS Director Dr. Nagari Bheerappa stated that a similar heart transplant at a private hospital would cost around ₹40 lakh. However, Anil received the treatment free of charge through the Telangana government’s Aarogyasri scheme and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).
