Next Saskatchewan election is set for 2028, but Carla Beck is already in 'election mode'

The Saskatchewan NDP's pace in 2025 has been frenetic.
It's not uncommon for the party to hold three or four news conferences a day on different subjects, often in different regions of the province.
That level of output is more fitting for an election campaign, and the plan — whether or not it is effective — is part of a conscious choice, NDP Leader Carla Beck says.
In a year-end interview, Beck admitted people are correct when they say the party seems to already be in "election mode" only a year after the last vote.
"We believe that people in this province deserve so much better than what they're getting right now after 18 years of the Sask Party," she said.
The NDP's team of MLAs, many of whom were elected for the first time in 2024, has rapidly come together, which was the highlight of her year, Beck said.
She sees an opportunity to set everyone up to succeed, she said.
"I've heard that from people right across this province — they see how hard this team is working. They see how sharp they are, how well they know their files, how many ideas they're bringing forward, even just one year past an election."
Presenting solutions to Saskatchewan's problems has been a key point for the NDP and the party has chosen to communicate those solutions through the introduction of private member's bills, including during the recent legislative sitting, Beck said.
Topics chosen by the NDP have included rent control, a new wildfire strategy, health-care transparency and a judicial review of the government's use of the notwithstanding clause.
In almost every case, the government has indicated it won't support the NDP's bills.
Beck said the legislation is more is about sending a message.
"The government can choose to take our advice or not. I'm interested in bringing forward those solutions for people in this province because they, in many cases, are desperately waiting for them," she said.
Beck said a case of influenza was the reason she attended only nine of the fall sitting's 25 days.
