Toronto police launch safety blitz in school zones to crack down on illegal parking

Toronto police headed to school zones Monday as part of a safety blitz following March Break.
The campaign, which runs until Friday, will focus on safety in school zones through enforcement, police said in a news release on Monday.
Parking enforcement officers will monitor illegal parking near schools to make sure drivers are not creating risks for children and pedestrians, police said. Officers will also pay attention to no stopping and no parking zones, crosswalks and school bus loading areas.
"It is paramount that drivers prioritize the safety of our most vulnerable road users — schoolchildren and pedestrians," police said in the release.
Erin Urquhart, a parking enforcement officer, said drivers should plan ahead for drop-offs and pick-ups.
"We just like to remind drivers to give themselves extra time and to be mindful of all of the parking bylaws in and around school zones," Urquhart said.
Liz Albrecht-Bisset, principal of Wilkinson Junior Public School, said drivers need to remember to slow down and watch for children in school zones.
Bus drop-off zones also need to be clear, she said.
"One of the big things is making sure people aren't trying to park when the buses are pulling in because we don't want children having to cross a live lane of traffic to get into school," she said.
She said the campaign is a helpful reminder for drivers as to where they can and cannot park.
"I think anything helps," she said. "Sometimes with the time change and after March Break, maybe people are in a bit of a rush and a little tired coming back and it's great to remind people about the school zones."
