An inmate who was on the loose after escaping a jail in Shediac has been caught, New Brunswick RCMP said in a press release late Monday afternoon.
The release said Todd John Lewis had been arrested in Moncton but provided no other details.
RCMP Cpl. Sebastian Pelchat said in a brief phone interview that members of the RCMP Crime Reduction Unit noticed Lewis while conducting routine patrols in Moncton on Monday and began to surveil him.
They were able to arrest him, but not without a fight, he said.
"He did not say 'take me home,'" Pelchat said, but he added that officers were able to quickly apprehend him without injury.
Pelchat said Lewis will remain in RCMP custody overnight before appearing before a judge on Tuesday to face charges for fleeing.
"He was good at hiding, but everybody makes a mistake at some point," Pelchat said.
"We've been looking for him for a while."
Lewis had escaped from Southeast Regional Correctional Centre, about 25 kilometres northeast of Moncton, around 5:20 p.m. on Feb. 12.
The escape was not reported to police until more than six hours after it happened, at almost 12:30 a.m., and police issued a release to the public around 10:45 the following morning.
RCMP had initially sent an alert that he was to be considered armed and dangerous.
Pelchat said RCMP do not believe Lewis harmed anyone while on the loose at this time. It appears he remained in the Moncton area, the officer said.
Lewis was previously charged with nine weapon-related charges, including carrying a restricted handgun and possessing a knife for dangerous purposes, court documents revealed.
Reached by phone after Lewis was caught, Shediac Mayor Roger Caissie said it was good news.
