Jipmer's new Regional Cancer Centre enhances treatment capacity and services, solidifying its role as a premier cancer care facility.
The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research on Sunday said the inauguration of the new building of the Regional Cancer Centre at Jipmer will further elevate the institute’s role as a centre of excellence in cancer care.
A release issued by Jipmer post inauguration of the facility by the Prime Minister said the new RCC building will help enhance bed capacity from 80 to 280, making Jipmer one of the largest government cancer care centre in the region.
Built at a cost of ₹94. 64 crore, the facility significantly strengthened cancer care treatment at Jipmer. Spread across 10,000 square metres, the facility houses six modern operation theatres facilitating comprehensive advanced surgical oncology services, expanded medical oncology wards and high-dependency units, specialised leukemia induction rooms and a strengthened bone marrow transplant unit with 14 isolation beds.
The new building also houses paediatric oncology division, a 40-bed chemotherapy day care unit, enhanced palliative care services and a newly established Department of Preventive Oncology focused on screening, awareness and early detection of common cancers, the release said.
“For decades, RCC Jipmer has served patients from Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and from across South and East India, particularly those from economically weaker sections. The expanded Centre strengthens delivery of subsidised cancer care and supports national health initiatives such as Pradham Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and assistance through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, enabling eligible patients to access cashless or financially supported treatment,” the institute said.
