The agency is reportedly planning to solicit industry proposals for a 100-kilowatt reactor to launch by 2030.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, a former Fox News host who is also the interim NASA administrator, reportedly will announce this week plans to build a nuclear reactor on the moon.
While NASA has discussed building a reactor on the lunar surface as part of its focus on crewed spaceflights, documents first obtained by Politico show that Duffy hopes to streamline the process.
The agency will solicit industry proposals for a 100-kilowatt reactor to launch by 2030, around the same time China plans to send an astronaut to the moon. The proposed reactor would generate enough electrical power for about 80 homes in the U.S.
“It is about winning the second space race,” a NASA senior official who was granted anonymity told Politico.
Having a nuclear reactor could be useful for long-term stays on the lunar surface, where solar power is less reliable during the two-week-long nights, The New York Times reported.
