CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten said on Sunday that President Donald Trump is “leader of the pack” in a way that could doom Republicans in this autumn’s midterm elections.
Trump now has the lowest approval rating on the economy among independent voters of all 21st-century presidents at the same point in their presidency.
Enten said Trump is 48 points underwater, nearly double former President Barack Obama, who was minus 25, and well beyond former President George W. Bush, who was at minus 32.
Just one in four independents approves of how Trump is handling the economy.
“These are numbers, that if I were a Republican running for Congress, I would be shaking in place because there’s really nowhere to hide if you’re a Republican running for Congress and President Trump is in this bad a shape among independents and Americans overall when it comes to the economy,” he said.
