
Nadia rape and murder case: Court orders 12-day CBI custody of accused Ranjit Mallick

The CBI had requested a 14-day remand of Ranjit Mallick, accused of raping a minor in West Bengal's Nadia. However, the court granted them 12 days.
Ranaghat sub-divisional court has ordered 12-day CBI custody of Ranjit Mallick who was arrested in the Hanskhali gangrape case on Saturday. One of the prime accused of the Nadia rape and murder case was produced in Ranaghat court on Sunday.
A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped on April 9 at the birthday party of a local TMC leader's son in the Hanskhali area of West Bengal’s Nadia district. The girl died on Sunday.
The CBI lawyer requested a 14-day remand. However, the judge granted the 12-day application.
Meanwhile, CPI-M state secretary Md Samil met the victim's family on Sunday.
He lashed out at the chief minister for raising questions over the alleged rape case, "Mamata Banerjee blamed the girl. The same thing is happening all over the country. Everyone is blaming the victim only to assassinate her character".
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee raised questions over the reports of the alleged gang-rape case. "Was it rape? Or did she get pregnant after an affair? Have they inquired," she asked. The CM said, “The girl died on April 5 and the police came to know on April 10. If she died on April 5 and if there was a grievance, why did they not go to the police on the day of the incident? They cremated the body! Where will the police get the evidence?"

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
