Mundka fire: NHRC asks Delhi govt to submit report in 2 weeks; sends probe team to site

Taking suo motu cognizance of the Mundka fire that claimed the lives of 27 people, the NHRC has asked the Delhi government to submit a report on the matter within two weeks. The Commission has also decided to send a probe team to the site.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the Delhi Chief Secretary, seeking a report on the Mundka fire incident that claimed the lives of 27 people. The Delhi government has been asked to submit the report within two weeks. The NHRC has also decided to send its own team to investigate the site.
The Commission took suo motu cognizance of the May 13 fire that killed 27 people in a four-storey office in Mundka, Delhi.
“This fire incident has once again established that the city authorities have learnt little from similar incidents in the past that exposed the utter lack of fire safety mechanisms and the gaping holes in their implementation,” NHRC stated.

The NHRC asked the Delhi Chief Secretary to inform it about the action taken against the officials responsible as well as on the status of disbursement of relief and rehabilitation of the victims.
“The commission has observed that going by the contents of media reports, this appears to be the worst case of gross violation of human rights of the victims due to utter apathy and complete dereliction of statutory duties of public servants in the national Capital of Delhi causing loss of valuable lives due to fire,” an NHRC statement said.
The Commission also asked its director-general to send a team immediately to conduct an on the spot investigation in the matte.
