
Mumbai Police's probe into Rs 2 lakh bitcoin scam unearths Rs 200 crore financial fraud

Matunga Police nabbed a man from Bengaluru for allegedly defrauding investors by promising large returns on investments in crypto-mining schemes. Police found that the gang carried out financial transactions of over Rs 200 crore in bank accounts.
Mumbai Police arrested a Bengaluru resident for allegedly duping a music teacher of Rs 2.47 lakh after promising him high returns by investing in bitcoin mining. Mumbai Police have found financial transactions worth Rs 200 crore in eleven bank accounts while investigating a Rs 2 lakh bitcoin scam. The accused has been identified as Mohammaed Jabir (31).
According to a TOI report, the gang of the accused carried out financial transactions of over Rs 200 crore in bank accounts to dupe people.
Last year, a man filed a complaint with the Matunga police station after he was cheated in a bitcoin scam. The victim told the police that in August last year, he had received a text message which asked him to invest in bitcoin mining, promising him a daily return on the investment. He was asked to download an application 'Arohash' from the Play store, the Indian Express reported.
The teacher downloaded the app and received a profit of Rs 50 on an investment of Rs 2,000, he told police. Police were quoted by TOI as saying that the victim continued receiving high profits for his investments. The complainant then received a call from a person, Arav Khanna, asking him to invest a large sum of money for profit.
The accused fell into the trap and ended up investing Rs 2.47 lakh in the app for bitcoin.
The victim told the police that the accused also formed a WhatsApp group to which 200 investors were added. But after a few days, the app was removed from the Play Store citing' technical reasons' and the group was also deleted.
The victim tried calling the callers for the money but he failed to receive any response. He approached the police and lodged a complaint after realising that he had been cheated.
