A joint team of officials of the Motor Vehicles Department, the police, the Public Works Department and the National Highway examined the Panayampadam road accident site at Karimba near Kalladikode on Saturday afternoon ahead of finalising an action plan to prevent recurrence of accidents.
Four 13-year-old girls of Government Higher Secondary School, Karimba, were crushed under a truck that flipped over them while they were walking home from school at Panayampadam on the National Highway-966 on Thursday, triggering an outcry against frequent accidents there.
The government team examined both sides of the road from the accident site to Dubaikunnu. They said they were working on the action plan, which would be finalised in a meeting convened by District Collector S. Chithra.
Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar too visited the accident site on Saturday and said that efforts would be made to rectify the unscientific road construction that caused the accident. He said the licences of the lorry drivers involved in the accident would be revoked.
The Minister said that the road construction was unscientific, with one side of the median being wider. The median of the road will be realigned and a divider be constructed, he said.
The Minister said that the auto-stand on the right side of the road would be shifted to the left side. Public Works Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas will convene a meeting of the officials of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the Road Transport Authority on Tuesday.
Mr. Ganesh Kumar said that if the NHAI refuses to sanction money to rectify the bad construction, the State government would take care of it through the Road Safety Authority. He said the people had raised a similar safety issue at Mundur also, and it would be brought to the notice of the Public Works Minister.
