Police arrested the accused after a daylight shooting in Meerut. The man's encounter with police following a search operation was captured on video, in which he could be seen lighting a beedi before surrendering.
A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut allegedly shot his wife’s lover dead in broad daylight on a busy market road and later recorded an expletive-filled confession on video, a clip of which has gone viral on social media. The man, identified as Pradeep, was later confronted by the Meerut Police, with cops surrounding him following a search operation. His encounter with the police was also recorded on video in which the man is seen nonchalantly lighting a bidi before surrendering.
The incident took place in Meerut's Ramraj on Wednesday afternoon. According to police, the victim, identified as 28-year-old Surendra alias Sunil, was riding his motorcycle through the main market when a masked assailant approached from behind and shot him in the waist.
As Surendra fell onto the road, the attacker allegedly came closer and fired from his pistol again before fleeing. The injured man was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and rushed additional forces to the spot amid panic in the market.
Preliminary inquiry suggests the victim was in a relationship with Pradeep's wife. Police said the woman had left her husband Pradeep around one-and-a-half years ago and had been living with Surendra. Officials believe this was the motive for the killing.
Meanwhile, a separate video circulating online purportedly shows the accused claiming responsibility for the murder. In the clip, the man, seen holding weapons, confesses that he carried out the shooting as revenge and threatens to kill his wife as well.
He is also heard challenging the police and asking that the video be shared widely, including with the Meerut Senior Superintendent of Police.
