MCD ramps up sanitation drive, eyes higher ranking in cleanliness survey

MCD intensifies sanitation efforts to improve cleanliness ranking ahead of the upcoming Swachh Survekshan 2026 survey.

Aiming to improve its Garbage Free City (GFC) ranking, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has intensified monitoring of sanitation work across the Capital ahead of the Swachh Survekshan 2026 survey, which is expected to begin next month.

According to a senior official, special emphasis is being placed on solid waste management parameters, which affect the overall cleanliness ranking.

Delhi’s performance in the previous survey highlights the scale of the challenge. In Swachh Survekshan 2025, the MCD ranked 31st among 40 urban local bodies in the million-plus cities category, scoring 7,920 points. While the city recorded strong performance in certain areas – including 100% door-to-door garbage collection, cleanliness of market areas, and 93% cleanliness in residential neighbourhoods – it got comparatively low scores in several key indicators.

 “In the last two months, we have increased monitoring of key sanitation indicators such as dumpsite remediation, toilet cleanliness, waste generation versus processing, and drain cleaning,” the official said.

The official said daily and weekly sanitation action plans have been prepared for different zones to ensure closer supervision.

The civic body aims to retain its Water+ certification for sanitation and improve its GFC rating. Delhi has remained at one-star GFC rating in the past two surveys in 2023 and 2024.
