District Collector A.P. Mahabharathi inspected sugarcane procurement activities at Sembathaniruppu village, Sirkazhi taluk, ahead of the distribution of Pongal gift hampers to ration cardholders.
The State government has announced that Pongal gift hampers, comprising 1 kg of raw rice, 1 kg of sugar, and a whole sugarcane, will be distributed to 2,83,357 eligible ration cardholders across Mayiladuthurai district through 435 fair price shops. Distribution will begin on January 9, following its inauguration by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. To ensure smooth operations, token systems will be in place starting January 7 and those unable to collect their hampers by January 13 will have an additional opportunity on January 14.
During his visit, Mr. Mahabharathi emphasised on adherence to government guidelines for sugarcane procurement, particularly maintaining the required five-foot length for each cane. He urged farmers to cooperate fully and assured them of fair procurement.
