West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticised the Centre for the death of an Indian student in Ukraine. The Indian student was killed in Russian shelling in Kharkiv.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday slammed the Centre for the death of an Indian student in Ukraine shelling and called it 'government negligence'.

"This is negligence. Negligence is a crime. It takes a couple of phone calls to do all these, how much time would it take from political rallies," she said.

Mamta Banerjee said, "I have supported PM Modi on Ukraine. But I have a question if PM knew about such a thing three months back. Why were these Indian students not brought back? It is the responsibility of any government to bring them back."

Earlier, the Trinamool Congress chief had extended her support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the evacuation of Indian citizens from Ukraine, following the Russian invasion.

"I don't want to criticise the government in matters of external affairs. We are one. But because they are busy in politics, things did not happen," she alleged.

She also slammed the ministers, who are being sent to Ukraine's neighbouring countries to facilitate evacuation, by stating that the civil aviation minister gave a speech after landing in Romania. Banerjee said the PM sends his ministers to give speeches and do politics.
