CBC Newfoundland and Labrador is kicking off its annual holiday campaign, helping to raise money to support local food banks.
Join CBC N.L. for a special day of programming across the province. Donations are being accepted by the Community Food Sharing Association until Dec. 31, but Friday marks the beginning.
Tina Bishop, executive director of the Community Food Sharing Association, is meeting visitors at the door of Bannerman Brewing in St. John's on Friday morning. The organization is collecting monetary and non-perishable food item donations throughout the day.
The Community Food Sharing Association distributes donations to 60 food banks across Newfoundland and Labrador.
“This is what helps us get through our holiday season,” Bishop told CBC Radio's The St. John's Morning Show.
About 16,000 people in Newfoundland and Labrador access food banks every month, she said, adding the demand increased by 8.3 per cent last year.
“It’s very disturbing when we hear numbers like that," Bishop said. "Just be kind to people when you're out there doing your holiday shopping."
Make the Season Kind is CBC's national holiday campaign to support local food banks. Since 2012, CBC has helped raise over $64 million for food banks and charities across Canada.
If you're in the neighbourhood, feel free to join us at several locations across the province.
The St. John's Morning Show started the day with a live broadcast at Bannerman Brewing on Duckworth Street.
The Signal will be live from the same location at noon. Host Adam Walsh will be joined by special guest Mallory Johnson for an hour of live music.
The day will wrap with On The Go, also at Bannerman, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Join host Krissy Holmes with music by KitchinParti.
The snow in Happy Valley-Goose Bay didn't stop Labrador Morning’s annual turkey drive in support of the Roland Shears Memorial Christmas Hamper program.
The hamper program has been a community tradition for 50 years. Jean Shears has been involved from the beginning.
