Made-in-India stealth frigate Dunagiri launched in Kolkata

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched made-in-India stealth frigate Dunagiri in Kolkata.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday launched the P17A stealth frigate Dunagiri, named after a mountain range in Uttarakhand and built by PSU Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, onto the river Hooghly in Kolkata.

P17A ships are guided-missile frigates and Dunagiri is the fourth P17A ship. The ships have improved stealth features, advanced weapons, sensors and platform management systems.

A Leander class ASW frigate of the same name, was in service for 33 years till October 20, 2010.

In his address, the chief guest, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, said that such a launch of ships by Indian shipyards signifies the advancement of self-reliance of the country.

The first two ships of the P17A Project were launched in 2019 and 2020. The third ship, Udaygiri, was launched in Mumbai on May 17 this year.

P17A ships have been designed in-house by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design (DND), which has successfully spear-headed the design of numerous class of indigenous warships in the past.
