LPG shortage begins to hit Hyderabad’s PGs and hostels, owners fear disruption to meals

Hyderabad faces an LPG shortage impacting PGs and hostels, raising concerns over meal preparation for residents.
As concerns grow over shortage of commercial Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Hyderabad, paying guest (PG) accommodations and private hostels across the city have begun to feel the impact, with several owners reporting a sharp drop in supply and warning that prolonged disruption could affect the preparation of meals for residents.
The shortage comes amid ongoing supply constraints flagged by the Union Petroleum Ministry, which has indicated that distribution of LPG cylinders has been affected in several regions due to logistical and supply chain pressures amid ongoing conflict in West Asia. The situation has sparked anxiety among establishments that rely heavily on a steady flow of commercial cylinders to run their kitchens.
Hyderabad is home to thousands of young professionals and students from across the country, many of whom work in the city’s IT and pharmaceutical sectors and depend on private hostels, paying guest accommodations for daily meals.
Managers and supervisors of large paying guest facilities, particularly in the IT hubs such as Gachibowli, Kukatpally and Madhapur, say the reduction in supply has been sudden and significant.
“The supply has dropped drastically, by 75%. If we used to order around 100 cylinders earlier, we are now receiving barely 20 to 25,” said Lakshmi of Amulya Grand Luxury Women’s PG in Gachibowli. “If this continues for long, we may struggle to cook meals for all our residents.” Food for the men’s hostel, women’s hostel and a new building being opened by the same owner is prepared in a central kitchen located in the building, making a steady LPG supply critical for daily operations.
Others in the same locality echoed similar concerns, saying the disruption comes after a long period of stable supply. “Until recently, we were receiving cylinders without any issue,” said Kalyani, owner of Kalyani Women’s PG in Gachibowli. “But now the supply has reduced and it is becoming difficult to plan kitchen operations.”
