Spotify is stacking the most-beloved pop songs against one another in a new playlist.
Spotify dropped its 100 Greatest Pop Songs of the Streaming Era in a ranked playlist on Thursday, Feb. 26. Olivia Rodrigo's 2021 release "drivers license," from her album, "SOUR" took the No. 1 spot, followed by Chappell Roan's "Pink Pony Club," Taylor Swift's "Cruel Summer," Dua Lipa's "Don't Start Now" and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Run Away with Me," to round out the top five.
"Pop music has been an omnipresent force for decades, but streaming allowed it to flourish as a space for artistic expression rather than solely commercial success," a Spotify news release says. "Once measured by a single metric – popularity – the landscape now embraces new influences and styles while staying grounded in pop sounds."
In early February, Spotify released its Classic Pop Albums of the Streaming Era, including standouts such as Adele's 2015 release "25," Beyoncé's 2016 release "Lemonade," Chappell Roan's 2023 "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess" and Taylor Swift's 2017 "reputation." This list is not ranked like the pop songs playlist.
