An astrologer-cum-tantric was arrested for raping a woman on the pretext of curing her ailing husband in Kolkata's Chitpur. The woman alleged that the accused claimed he would perform yagnas to save her husband and took her to different places for performing rituals.
She told police, he spiked her drink and raped her on two occasions when she became unconscious.
Abhijit Ghosh also known as Jyotish Subhas and Jyotish Subhasish was identified as the accused by the police. The woman said in her complaint that the accused earned her trust on the pretext of performing specific rituals for the protection of her family members.
The accused was arrested by Chitpur police, for allegedly raping the woman.
The woman said that she was taken to several locations around Birbhum, Burdwan, and Diamond Harbour under the guise of performing rites for which she was required to ingest a spiked beverage and resins, The Times of India reported.
The woman said that she had gone unconscious twice after drinking the spiked drink. When she regained consciousness, she realised she had been raped. She alerted the police when the accused requested her to leave the city for the third time.
An officer said that the accused informed the victim that her spouse was sick and that something needed to be done to improve his health. The woman trusted the accused and followed his directions, the officer said.
